Why Volunteer?

As the new ORYA Director, that question is of the utmost importance.  Why do you volunteer?  Why give up your precious time to coach, solicit donations or sell hot dogs & candy at the concession stand?

The general world we live in these days is faster paced than ever.  Kids have more choices, more things to do, more distractions, hobbies, interests and activities to get involved in.  With this faster paced lifestyle I sometimes feel volunteering can be seen as just another thing to squeeze into our busy schedules.  Honestly, I don't know how most of you do it!

If we all think back to what our parents taught us about volunteering, or what you're currently teaching your own children, we'll remember that volunteering gives us the chance give back to the community and make a difference in another life. It gives us a sense of pride and accomplishment.  It sets a precedence for our own children to follow as well as other members of the community.  Those are the reasons I think of but are those the reason everyone thinks of? I’m not sure.

Recently, I found an article from Forbes Magazine titled "5 Surprising Benefits of Volunteering."  It offers an alternate list of reason to volunteer I had never pondered.  They approach the question more from what benefits you as the volunteer rather than the benefits to those you are working with.   I think you all know how & why volunteering helps others but have you thought about how it helps YOU?  Did you know people that volunteers are statistically healthier?  Another article (HERE) outlines how volunteering can benefit your career via networking and social engagement. THIS article from Psychology Today outlines the benefits to your mind and body.  All things I never considered.

Take a few moments to read those very short articles and think about other benefits either you gain or offer to others by volunteering.  I hope to make all of our ORYA volunteers feel proud, feel supported and understand that no matter your level of expertise you are making a difference!
